Luxury Waterfront Home

Technology Meets Design!

Luxury Waterfront Home

Technology Meets Design!

SOLUTION DETAILS

This 8,000 sq ft home is nestled on an oversized waterfront lot in Hallandale Beach, FL. The design intent for this home was to create a tropical modern environment that would capitalize on the views of the water to bring a paradise feel inside, as well as maximize high technology performance- while minimizing the number of devices seen. The client and designers were very adamant about not wanting to see any in-ceiling speakers or any devices that could interfere with their unique design. They referred to them as “eye sores and wall acne”. They also asked that everything that was going to be seen needed to be symmetric and blend in with the decor of the house. They wanted to enjoy the perks of smart technology without interfering with their tropical paradise home design! The owner is a music enthusiast, so it was very important that the speakers were discreet, but without compromising the quality of the sound. Taking this aesthetic challenge into consideration, we designed a technology solution that not only performed to the technical specifications they were looking for, but was sure to please the designers and homeowners by blending seamlessly with the modern and minimalist design of the home.

Solution Details:

During the thorough initial consultation, our technology integrator found out that the owner of the house was an orthodox Jewish who strictly observed Sabbath and every Jewish Holiday- which prohibits the turning-on of any type of electricity/electronics and any motion activated events during those days. He wanted to be able to have “all the bells and whistles” as he called them, but at the same time be able to respect his religion and observe the Holidays.

Taking into consideration the owner’s love for technology and his respect for his faith, we did a ton of research trying to fully understand the jewish religion and were able to find the best solution for this client. For his first passion- technology- we specified  a “full-blown” Control4 home automation system that controls panelized lighting, 16-zones of audio, 8-zones of video, climate control, security, intercom, motorized window treatments, pool control, and irrigation system control. To overcome the challenge of being able to use this great technology during the observed Holidays and allow the client be true to his orthodox faith, we integrated the cloud-based hebrew calendar with a Control4 hebcal driver from Chowmain Designs. This driver automatically detects Jewish holidays and the standard Shabbat- observed from a few minutes before sunset every Friday evening and ending with the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night, which is called Havdalah. The system sends a notification of Candle lighting, exactly 18 minutes before sundown, as well as Havdalah, which happens after the appearance of three stars in the sky.  The driver is combined with the advanced announcements driver from Control4 to announce what holiday is being celebrated through the speakers. It also aids with the automation of electronic devices, so there is no touch during Shabbat and other Jewish Holidays.

The custom solution we provided allows the homeowners to have all the electronics in the house automated, so that no touch is required for their use during Shabbatt and other Jewish holidays. The system is syncronized to turn all audio & video off and execute specific lighting and security scenes at the beginning of Shabbat every Friday at sundown. Because there can not be any manual or motion activated use of electricity, certain lights are programmed to stay on during Shabbat (without the homeowner’s action), as well as some security cameras and alarm system features are turned off. In addition, a notification is sent to the client 18 minutes prior to Shabbat (candle lighting). Shabbat runs through Saturday at sundown, at which point the system resets to normal operations. This solution certainly enhances the homeowners’ lifestyle allowing them to enjoy technology during their regular days, as well as observe their holidays without compromising.
